This is a khutbah I delivered in Homewood, Alabama last Friday, March 24, 2012. This khutbah is about how Islam can change a person’s life and how we as Muslims can change our lives with Islam.
I begin the khutbah by talking about the story of Wahshi Ibn Harb. There are lots of conversion stories from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) but Wahshi’s story is one of the best. He started out as a person who killed one of the most beloved people to Allah and His Messenger. Yet, after accepting Islam, he became a person who killed one of the enemies of Allah.

The story also involves the great Muslim general, Khalid Ibn Waleed. While I do mention him in this khutbah and I talk about some of his feats, he does not play a major role in this khutbah. Nonetheless, his story is also one of change.
Both Wahshi and Khalid changed their lives dramatically after becoming Muslim. Washi, as I mentioned helped defeat Musailamah The Liar, while Khalid became one of history’s greatest generals.

There are other stories from the time of the companions to now about how Islam has changed people’s lives. For instance, the story of Malcolm X. He started off as a criminal, then became a leader in a misguided, racist organization.
But after becoming Muslim, making Hajj and seeing the beauty and universality of Islam, he changed his perspective completely.
Inshallah, after hearing this khutbah, I hope you can also begin to work on ways to bring positive changes to your life. They don’t have to be major, earth shattering changes.
Perhaps, just small, incremental, yet meaningful changes will suffice. The point is, we should always be seeking to improve ourselves and move closer to Allah.
