I Hate The Star And Crescent

If You’re Muslim, You Should Hate The Star And Crescent Also

That’s not a typo. I really despise the so-called Islamic symbol of the star and crescent. I hate it because it has absolutely nothing to do with Allah, His Messenger (pbuh), or His book (The Quran).

First, some background.

A couple of weeks ago I gave a khutbah called “How To Earn Allah’s Love” in which I mentioned the so-called “Moon god” theory. In this khutbah, I talked about a comic strip that made its way into the Muslim boarding school I attended as a teenager. One of the primary “proofs” this comic book brought forward was the fact that the crescent moon was a symbol throughout most of the Muslim world.

Several years after I read this comic at school, a Christian co-worker of mine mentioned another Christian missionary comic book.

In this one, they were trying to make the claim that Islam was invented by the Catholic Church. They said that Jesuit priests created Islam through Prophet Muhammad’s wife Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her) who they claim was Catholic.

Sex And Marriage In Islam E-Book

They went on to claim that the leaders of Islam collaborated with the Catholic Papacy to hide these facts and most Muslims today know nothing about it.

I did not know it at the time, but both of these comics were written, drawn, and produced by the same man. It wasn’t until recently (like three weeks ago) that I put the facts together and realized that person behind these comics were one and the same.

These comics were produced by a Christian missionary cartoonist named Jack Chick. He has produced lots of similar comics all focused on pushing his brand of Christian fanaticism. Though all of his comics do not focus on Islam, he has drawn at least three that do.

Is The Bible God’s Word?

If you want to know what the first comic was about that I mentioned I’d suggest you listen to my khutbah first. I refuse to link to Jack Chick’s website from Islamic Learning Materials. But if you do a Google search, you’re bound to find it eventually.

First, let’s talk about this whole Moon-god foolishness.

Every Muslim knows that we don’t worship the moon. Anyone who worships the moon is doomed to hell. The most ignorant Muslim knows this basic fact. I can bring up dozens of verses from the Quran that clearly show that the moon is a creation of Allah and is not to be worshipped. But I’ll just bring up two of them.

If you asked them, “Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?” they would surely say, ” Allah .” Then how are they deluded?
Chapter 29 Verse 61

And even more telling is when the Quran mentions the Prophet Abraham (AS) used the moon as an example of things that are worshiped that should not be worshiped.

And when he saw the moon rising, he said, “This is my lord.” But when it set, he said, “Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray.”
Chapter 6 Verse 77

I can go on and on, but there’s no need to. This is absolute proof that Muslims do not worship the Moon and that we see it as nothing more than something to calculate time with. In other words, it is a tool that Allah has given us for our benefit.

And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous, and subjected for you the night and the day.
Chapter 14 Verse 33

To worship the moon would be as foolish as worshipping a hammer or a clock.

Now, for the second claim, that Khadijah (RA) was a closet Christian who was used by the Catholic Church to create a new religion to capture Jerusalem (kinda silly when you think they captured Jerusalem during the Crusades anyway).

First of all, anyone who believes in such a ridiculous fairy tale should give me a call. I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell them.

There are a lot of consipiracy theories out there. Freemasonry. 9-11. Aliens. President Kennedy’s assassination.

But this one has to be the silliest of them all.

Why?

Because there is absolutely no proof. None. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Zip.

I’ve run out of euphamisms but I’m sure you get my point.

Jack Chick bases this whole idea on the fact that Khadijah (the wife of Prophet Muhammad pbuh) had a Christian uncle name Waraqah and there are some similarities in the beliefs between Muslims and Christians.

What Does The Bible Say About Muhammad?

Of course, he says there are secret documents that some mysterious Jesuit Priest has confided in him do truly exist. And that the Catholic Church has worked hard to hide all of this evidence.

Well, if you believe that, in addition to that bridge I mentioned earlier, I’m also hiding a little green alien in my kitchen cupboard if you’re interested.

First of all, there’s no proof that Khadijah was Christian. Khadijah is not exactly a Christian name.

Second, while there are some similarities between Islam and Christianity, there are also major differences.

  • For instance, both Muslims and Christians believe in angels. But our belief is completely different. Muslims believe angels are incapable of disobeying Allah whereas Christians believe Satan (the Devil) led a revolt against Allah with an army of disobedient angels.
  • Muslims and Christians both believe in Jesus the son of Mary (peace be upon them both). But Muslims believe he was a Prophet of Allah and Christians believe he is Allah and worship him as God.
  • Muslims and Christians both believe in many of the same prophets (not including Jesus and Muhammad). But our belief in these prophets are very different. Christians believe Prophet Lot, Isaac, Noah, David, and Solomon all committed major sins that even the average man wouldn’t commit. But Muslims do not believe in such things.

The comic also claimed Muslims and Catholics conspired together to hide this information. This is unbelievable on so many levels.

For one thing, there is no heirarchy in Islam, there is no central authority. There have been so many political upheavals in Islamic history there is no way this information could have stayed hidden. With all the fighting between Sunnis and Shias, and Sunnis and Sunnis, such a scandal would have gotten out eventually.

Furthermore, just look at the history of the Islamic Caliphate. After the Prophet died, Abu Bakr became Caliph. Then Umar and then Uthman. After Uthman there was political upheaval and Ali was fighting througout most of his reign. After that there was a lot of infighting and warfare. There simply was no time nor opportunity to pass on secret knowledge from one man to the next.

Besides, Muslims can’t even agree on when Ramadan begins. Do you really think we’re gonna be able to collaborate to hide such a major secret?

And if any more proof is needed to prove this is an absurd claim, read these verses from the Quran:

The Jews say “The Christians have nothing [true] to stand on,” and the Christians say, “The Jews have nothing to stand on,” although they [both] recite the Scripture. Thus the polytheists speak the same as their words. But Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
Chapter 2 Verse 113

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.
Chapter 2 Verse 120

Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, “Are you more knowing or is Allah ?” And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah ? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
Chapter 2 Verse 140

Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim
Chapter 3 Verse 67

And from those who say, “We are Christians” We took their covenant; but they forgot a portion of that of which they were reminded. So We caused among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. And Allah is going to inform them about what they used to do.
Chapter 5 Verse 14

O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliya’ (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliya’ to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliya’, then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust).
Chapter 5 Verse 51

They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah , my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
Chapter 5 Verse 72

Now, does that sound the words of people who are collaborating with the Catholics (who along with the Greek Orthodox were the only Christians Prophet Muhammad knew about)?

Digital Quran And Encyclopedia From Darussalam

Just a quick note on that whole moon-god thing.

One of the things Jack Chick used in this argument was the fact that the crescent is a prominent symbol with Muslims. While this idea of his shows his ignorance of history and Islam, it does highlight something else.

As Muslims, we must stop using the star and crescent as a symbol of Islam. It is not a symbol of Islam. It has no place in Islam. And we have no right to accept it as such.

No where in the Quran is the star and crescent revered as a symbol of Allah or Islam.

And no where in the Hadith and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the star and crescent endorsed as a symbol of Islam.

Yet, everywhere we look, the star and crescent is portrayed as an Islamic symbol, even by Muslims.

Even the Masjid I used to work at here in Alabama has a big bronze crescent on top of it.

The Ottoman Empire And The Modern Middle East

We Do Not Worship The Stars Or The Moon

Just imagine if Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his companions were to see a modern Masjid with stars and crescents all over it. What would they think?

They would believe these were temples built for the worship of the stars and moon.

After all, they did not see these things on their Masjids.

This is a scary thought.

And yes, I hate the star and crescent.

  1. the moon and crescent was just the symbol that the islamic red cross used and the ottoman empire used on its flag but no it is not a symbol of islam..it is the symbol of the mighty ottoman empire and saladeen at that time though and the qatub or 8 pointed star of allah or the seal of the prophets is just calligraphy woven into callagriphy art on masjids…so I don’t know f that could be considdered a symbol or symbolism or shirk either?

  2. I don’t believe we as muslims ever needed to have a symbol. We should be happy doing what we were put on earth to do.

  3. I am from Indonesia, and what a sad “comment” i read here..before “Judging”..Please chek and re-Check (Qur’an surah 49:6) .
the symbol of star and crescent were used by the army of sulthan Muhammad al Fatih in conquering Constantinopel ( it was a presticious country, central of Christian orthodoks). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) already foretold 800 years before about the sulthan and his army ” ” Verify, You shall Conquer Constantinopel, what a wonderful leader will its leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be”. So, will us “hate” the man of Rasullulah proud of? The Sulthan and the 350.000 troops (many of them were “volunteers”) were focused to realize the Prophet “target”. Rasulullah when telling this, were acussed as “MAD..MAD..MAD” by the jew and Musyrikin. Then it realized 800 years later, prove that Rasul is not Lie and Rasul not MAD. The Sulthan and the troops, they were mujahidin, they never left sholat lail/tahajjud. they has the same quality to the Sulthan Sholahuddin al Ayyubi in faith and spirit of Jihad, and love the Rasululllah. do your own research, learn old manuscript or anything supported..do not hurry in Bad judge. or you shall give Fitnah to a person whom Allah and Rasul ridha.Wallahu’alam bissawab.

  4. BTW: I have checked the internet and this issue of Star and crescent as an paganism symbol or christian symbol, or even as a Hinduism symbol already spread out..What a big Fitnah, and the moslems also give “Smart” (they think) comment and “highly educated analyse” without carefully research; and then proudly participate spread this fitnah via facebook etc.

this one of good link about Sulthan Muh. Al Fatih the conqueror:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQejGUwz4Bg&feature=fvwrel.

The history or literatur about “star and crescent” maybe a bit difficult to find in this modern era. I have read it 20 years ago from an old book in my university (I dont remember the book title (sory) but the story so inspiring so I remember it). You should try your own research.

  5. 20 years ago I read an old book about the history of Moslem’s symbols star and crescent:

It was Sulthan Muhammad Al Fatih (21 years old) the conquer of Constantinopel in 1453.

Sulthan is a very religious YOUNG man, since Baligh to his death never left Shalat sunnah and Sholat tahhajud. in 8 years old already remember the whole Al-Quran.

He understand “modern” science such math, war strategy, management, and 7 language including greeks, italian, jew. His grand-grand father was the owner of the biggest observatorium in samarkhand.

His main teacher syeikh AAq Syam Shudien was a medical doctor and scientist who first discover “Bacteria”.

So the Sulthan must be smart and modern enough to disbelieve of any Paganism symbol,or ancient symbol of tribes. :(

The symbol of star and crescent he used for his army was not paganism symbol but it was Real-Real-Real “SIGN” from Allah after many night of praying tahajjud asking for guidance and help, because their army had failed several times in attacking Constantinopel. they were totally tired and the Army’s spirit “breaking down”.

One night after Tahajjud he saw with his EYES the The Crescent and a big glowing STAR in the Sky,(some tells in internet that “HE saw it “only” In his Dreams”, WRONG!! )

But the position of the star was so IMPOSSIBLE (but happened). the Star glow in the dark area of the crescent circle.(Remember that the muslim in that era were leading in astronomy). How come the star “Glow” if the SUN don’t face that (dark) area of the crescent’s cirle?

The Sultahn believed that it is the SIGN and answer from Allah ; and then he realized one of his IMPOSSIBLE strategy (the last alternative): DRAGGING his 70 WARSHIPS up and down the mountain (Imagine!!), to sneak in from the very weak side of Constantinopel.

    only in one night the Ships already settled in the targeted gulf and from the time, CONSTANTINOPEL CONQUERED;
just after 800 years of Prophet Muhammad foretold
” Verify, You shall Conquer Constantinopel, what a wonderful leader will its leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be”.

Since then the Symbol of Crescent and Star always use for the army’s Flag in mission spreading Islam to Europe. btw: Constantinopel is the Gate to europe.

The spirit of the leader and the army were ispired by muslims nations in the era of colonialisme. They were strugling againt Colonialsm for hundred years (including my country Indonesia, we fight for 350 years for freedom). The ‘Ulama (religious leaders) take the symbol in the TOP of Mosque to encourage the moslem spirits.

Let me tell you how the Colonialism try to cut off the muslim : The do not allowed the translating of Al-Quran, Gathering only allowed for death and birth event. In the gathering you were not allowed give your Chutbah, only dzikir allowed. They made “accidentally” confrontation just to find reason to killed or to jailed the “Ulama or the “muslim Extrimist”.

Million Muslims were killed in 350 years of my country struggling for freedom.

The Symbol of Star and Crescent is the “secret” message and inspiration for them to :
“Keep fight , Keep trying, never give up, even you have to do it for hundred years”…and some how the Colonialist didn’t aware of its “secret” message from this symbol.

    Wallahu’alam Bissawab.

    • As-Salaamu Alaikum,

There’s no way for me to verify if this story is accurate. But even if it is a true story, there are several parts that I cannot accept.

First, I’m not going to accept that any man after Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received revelation from Allah. There are definitely people who dream true dreams, but their dreams would have to be in accordance with what Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) already brought to us. If this person had a dream and he interpreted is wahiyy (inspiration) from Allah and it was adding something or changing something in Islam, I would say that this was from the devil.

If he had a dream saying he needed to put his trust in Allah, and he did so and he won the battle, that I can accept because that is in accordance with many verses in the Quran.

But there is no way this Sultan Muhammad Al Fatih received some new revelation from Allah. That is impossible.

Assuming he really did have this dream (and there’s no way to prove that he did or did not), he may have been receiving wahiyy from Shaytan. Or perhaps he misinterpreted the dream. Or perhaps others misinterpreted it after him. Or perhaps the dream never happened at all and this whole story is just a fabrication!

The point is, as Muslims we should only accept that which has been established by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). And he never ever established a “symbol” for Islam, i.e. the star and crescent.

      And Allah knows best.

      • Salaam Aleykum brother,
can you please briefly explain why you so firmly believe it’s impossible for The Almighty, The Responder to Prayer, to inspire or reveal what He wants to who He seems worthy and ready. Is there an ayah or anything that would point so. Are you talking in context of this topic or in general?
Anyway, as for the crescent and star and Sultan Fatih, I think he saw the magnificent Venus eclipse. I saw it one night myself. Here’s a very good photo I found: http://www.wallpaperfreehd.com/wallpapers/immersion_in_a_venus_eclipse__1920x1080_1078.jpeg
        Peace be with you.

        • Wa Alaikum Salaam,

          That’s a very beautiful picture.

I say that it’s impossible for anyone else to receive revelation because of the following verse:

This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
          Chapter 5, verse 3.

With this info, we know that the message of Islam was completed with the death of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). So any who comes after him claiming to have received some new revelation from Allah is lying or crazy.

I’m talking in both the context of this article and in general.

      • Agree with Abu Ibrahim.

Rasullulah (peace be upon him) never did establish the star and crescent as the symbol of Islam.

Even if there should be symbol of Islam for a flag, the shahadah/kalima is sufficient.
